Surely many of you still remember the scene of releasing sky lanterns in the movie Princess Toc May, right? That beautiful fairy-tale scene is not only found in animated movies, but it is also real and takes place every year in Pingxi, Taipei, Taiwan.

1. The origin of the Pingxi Sky Lantern festival
According to legend, Pingxi was once a remote but rich area, so it was often attacked by robbers. The villagers had to go up the mountain to avoid danger. Therefore, the lanterns were used by soldiers to signal to the villagers that their land was safe to return to. Therefore, the Taiwanese sky lantern festival also symbolizes peace, health and happiness in life.

2. Time and place
The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is usually held annually on the 15th day of the first lunar month. This event lasted for 7 days, with various places to release the sky approved and announced in advance by the Taipei city government.
Interestingly, the opening ceremony of the festival is always held at Jingtong Elementary School and Pingxi High School.
The closing ceremony and also the busiest holiday was held at Shifen Sky Lantern Square.
- Organizer: New Taipei City Government (New Taipei)
- Hours of operation: 18:00 to 21:00 p.m

3. Fun activities
The lights at the Binh Khe Sky Lantern Festival are provided free of charge by sponsoring organizations. For the first 3 days, there are three sessions of light dropping each day. Sessions are held at three different locations. Visitors can also release their own lights at designated locations and times (usually every 20 minutes).
If you are lucky enough to attend the festival at the best time of the light-dropping session, you will admire a brilliant fanciful night sky with thousands of lights flying up. You will feel like you are lost in a fairy tale world. There is a shimmering light with many dreams and hopes. You will enjoy a moment of true relaxation. All troubles seem to fly away with each lamp.
